You might be entitled money if you made any in-app purchases or purchased an app from Google Play between August 2016 and September 2023.
In order to
resolve accusations of antitrust violations pertaining to its alleged
suppression of competition in the Android app store, Google has consented to
pay $700 million and make many other concessions. Although the internet giant
accepted the settlement with state attorney’s general in September, the
contents of the agreement were only made public on Monday in a federal court in
San Francisco.
In the Google settlement, who is
entitled to receive money?
Sixty-three
million dollars of Google's $700 million settlement would go toward
compensating American customers who were duped into using the company's payment
processing system, which state attorneys general claimed resulted in higher
rates for online transactions.
To be
eligible for a portion of the $630 million, a person must fulfill the following
requirements:
maintain a
legitimate address on file with Google Payments.
At the time
of their Google Play app or in-app purchase, they were residing in the United
States, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or Washington, D.C.
made the
aforementioned acquisition between September 2023 and August 2016.
The
remaining $70 million of the settlement will go toward compensating individual
states for fines and other expenses Google is required to pay.
How can I file a claim?
Thankfully,
qualified customers won't need to file a formal claim.
Customers
will use automated payments to claim damages from Google, according to the
settlement administrator. Customers who meet the requirements will get emails
regarding the payment.
The
settlement letter stated, "The payments will be made directly to that
PayPal or Venmo account if the eligible consumer's email address associated
with his or her Google Play account matches an email address associated with an
existing PayPal or Venmo account."
How much cash will I receive?
According to
court filings, each qualified consumer would get a minimum of $2 as part of the
settlement. In addition, users might get extra payments for an unknown sum
based on how much they spend on Google Play between August 2016 and September
2023.
When clients
will receive their payments is unknown. Google did not reply to a comment
request from MarketWatch.
How many lives is this affecting?
Many people
are entitled for the payouts because Google Play has such a large user base and
the settlement covers a number of years. According to court records, 102
million people might benefit.
Regarding the complaint, what has
Google said?
Wilson
White, Google's vice president of government affairs and public policy, stated
in a blog post on Monday that "this settlement builds on Android's choice
and flexibility, maintains strong security protections, and retains Google's
ability to compete with other OS makers and invest in the Android ecosystem for
users and developers." "We're happy to move forward with a settlement
after our case with the states was resolved."
Alphabet
Inc., the parent company of Google, saw a 3% increase in its shares during
Wednesday afternoon trade, bringing its total gains over the previous 12 months
to over 58%.
